Two Dodge Ram pickup trucks were stolen from driveways in the southwest part of the city while the owners were asleep, according to Barrie police.
Both thefts occurred early Wednesday morning.
"The first theft involved a white 2023 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck that had Ontario licence plate BP61557 affixed to it. From the investigation that followed, police have been able to confirm that this truck was stolen at 1:20 a.m. as it was being started and driven away from the Kodiak Terrace home. Although video surveillance was available, it appears to have been disabled, and the theft was not captured," police said in a news release.
The second theft happened on Penvill Trail shortly before 2:30 a.m., and police said it involved a white, 2024 Dodge Ram 1500, with plate number BZ59352.
Investigators said a male who was dressed in dark clothing approached the front door and held up an unknown wired device.
"A few moments later, the pickup lights flash, the engine turns over and the truck is driven away," police stated.
Police said a canvass of both neighbourhoods was completed but no additional video surveillance was located that can assist in identifying who is responsible for these thefts.
Police are reminding pickup truck owners to utilize a Faraday pouch for their keys, consider the installation of an ignition defeat or tracking system, never leave their keys near the front door, and if possible, consider using a steering wheel locking device, an onboard diagnostic port lock or accelerator locking device. If available, other cars should be parked around any pickup truck that cannot be parked in a garage as pinning your truck may save it from being stolen.
If you are a resident of Barrie and would like to keep your key fobs safe, you can go to Barrie Police Headquarters with valid identification and receive a free Faraday Pouch.
