The City of Barrie is creating a new Zoning By-law, which is designed to implement the vision and policies of Barrie’s new Official Plan. A Zoning By-law controls the use of land in our community. It is a legally enforceable document—all new development and construction must follow the Zoning By-law.
Zoning tells us how land, buildings, and properties can be used (eg. residential or commercial), where buildings and other structures can be placed on a property, and how big and tall buildings can be. It tells you what you can do with your property, like widening your driveway, building an addition to your home, and requirements for landscaping, parking, sheds, and garages.
Open houses, both in-person and virtual, took place in September 2024 to gather feedback from residents and business owners. A public meeting at Barrie’s Affordability Committee was scheduled for October 1 but had to be cancelled due to an unexpected power outage at City Hall.
The public meeting has been rescheduled to November 14 at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers (70 Collier Street, Barrie). Members of the public can participate in the meeting by:
- Attending the meeting in person.
- Attending the meeting virtually if you wish to speak (register with Clerks by emailing cityclerks@barrie.ca or calling 705-739-4220 x5500).
- Watching the meeting on the City’s YouTube channel.
- Emailing or mailing written comments to cityclerks@barrie.ca or City of Barrie Legislative Services, PO Box 400, Barrie, ON, L4M 4T5 by 12 p.m. on November 14.
- If you wish to speak at the meeting (either in person or virtually), contact the Legislative Services Department in advance of the meeting by emailing cityclerks@barrie.ca, by calling 705-739-4220 x5500, or by filling out the Open Delegation request form.
Comments and letters submitted for the previously scheduled public meeting do not need to be resubmitted.
There will be changes to the draft Zoning By-law before the document returns to Council with a staff report, which is expected to occur in early 2025. View the latest draft of the Zoning By-law and learn more at BuildingBarrie.ca/zoning
