Chippewas of Rama First Nation Library Coordinator Danielle Big Canoe Snake has been named the 2025 Ontario Public Library Association (OPLA) Children’s or Youth Services Librarian of the Year. The award, one of the highest honours in Ontario’s library community, celebrates her exceptional commitment to inclusive, culturally grounded programming for young readers.

Danielle, who oversees programming and outreach at the Rama First Nation Public Library, will receive the award this fall during the OPLA Child and Youth Expo.

Her leadership has been quiet but powerful. Under her guidance, the Rama library has blossomed into a vibrant community hub—a place where children feel seen, stories are honoured, and Indigenous identity is proudly celebrated.

“Danielle’s work reflects the very best of what it means to serve your community,” said Chief Ted Williams of Rama First Nation. “She’s created a library that is not only a place to read and learn, but a space where our children can see themselves, their identity, and their culture reflected and celebrated.”

Beyond the library walls, Danielle’s impact stretches deep into the community. Her programming engages Elders, families, and educators, creating intergenerational ties through storytelling, language, and literacy. Her approach uplifts Indigenous voices and nurtures lifelong learning.

“I’m so honoured to receive this award,” Danielle shared. “This recognition really belongs to the youth I work with, the community that supports me, and all of the storytellers and knowledge keepers who continue to inspire our work.”

The Chippewas of Rama First Nation extended heartfelt congratulations to Danielle, recognizing her as not only a librarian but a bridge-builder—someone creating space for young people to thrive, connect, and grow.
