Real police investigating call from phony cop looking for personal info

Scammer claimed to be fraud investigator from Nottawasaga Detachment

Police are investigating allegations a phone scammer invoked the name of Nottawasaga OPP.

A local resident called the real police to report getting a call from a fake one the other day. In the call, the scammer claimed to be a member of Nottawasaga detachment in the process of investigating several frauds. At one point, the phony cop requested the resident provide their social insurance number.

Luckily, the resident was wise to the scam and didn’t provide any information.

The Nottawasaga OPP does not engage in calling members of the public under this pretext and wouldn’t ask for personal information like SINs. The OPP recommends hanging up should someone call and ask for it.
