Average asking rents hit a record in May: report

Renters in this country continue to face an extra tug on their pocketbook as a report by Urbanation and https://rentals.ca/national-rent-report shows the average asking rent for a home in Canada hit a record $2,202 in May, up 9.3 per cent compared with a year ago and 0.6 per cent from the previous month.

According to the report, the average asking rent for a one-bedroom unit in Canada was $1,927 in May, up 10.7 per cent from a year ago, and the average asking price for a two-bedroom unit was $2,234, an increase of 12.1 per cent.

In Barrie, the average asking rent for a one-bedroom unit was $1,968 in May, up 3.7 per cent from a year ago, while the average asking price for a two-bedroom unit was $2,297, down 7.5 per cent.

On the list of 35 cities, Vancouver was the most expensive for a one-bedroom unit in May at $2,671, down 5.6 per cent from a year ago, Burnaby was second on the list, followed by Toronto.

The lowest average asking rent for a one-bedroom was $955 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
