Road closures for Thursday's police funeral in Barrie

The funeral service is taking place at Sadlon Arena

News release from Barrie Police Service and The City of Barrie

On Thursday, October 20, 2022, in order to accommodate the funeral for Police Constable Morgan Russell and Police Constable Devon Michael Northrup of the South Simcoe Police Service, the Barrie Police Service will need to close a number of roads.

The following road closures will go into effect at the times indicated with an anticipated re-opening time of 4:00 p.m.

  • Bayview Drive from Big Bay Point to Churchill Drive will be closed commencing at 5:00 a.m.
  • Bayview Drive from Churchill Drive to Mapleview Drive will then be closed commencing at 8:00 a.m.
  • Harvie Road/Big Bay Point Road will be closed from Veterans Drive to Bayview Drive commencing at 5:00 a.m. These roads are expected to reopen at approximately 10:00 a.m.  Note:  Harvie Road becomes Big Bay Point Road at Fairview Road.
  • Fairview Drive will be closed at Little Ave, with local traffic access only.

Barrie Transit

Barrie Transit will not service the Park Place transit hub or Bayview Drive from Big Bay Point Road to Mapleview Drive East from beginning of service until approximately 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20. Routes 1 & 3 will detour away from Park Place and Bayview Drive along Welham Road, Route 8 will service Park Place from Mapleview Drive East and the Park Place entrance, and Routes 2 & 7 will detour away from Park Place and service Mapleview Drive West and Barrie View Drive. Note: Residents may notice other transit agency buses in Barrie on Thursday. They are being used to assist in shuttling first responders to the funeral.

Bayview Drive Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area (DOLRA)

The Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area (DOLRA) located on Bayview Drive will be closed the evening Wednesday, Oct. 19 and on Thursday, Oct. 20. Pet owners can attend the Sunnidale Park DOLRA located between Sunnidale Road & Coulter Street. More information at www.barrie.ca/DOLRA.

Event cancellations

The Family Fright Fest event on Wednesday, Oct. 19 has been cancelled. The Family Fright Fest event will still take place as planned tonight (Tuesday, October 18) from 5-8 p.m.

All bookings at the Sadlon Arena from Wednesday morning until noon on Friday, Oct. 21 have been cancelled or relocated. The City has contacted the impacted users directly.

On Monday, members of the Ontario Provincial Police Provincial Liaison Team (PLT) attended area businesses to advise of these closures.

The Barrie Police Service wish to thank the public and area businesses who will be affected by these road closures and are asking the public to reconsider any potential travel plans into the identified area on Thursday.

If there are any changes to the road re-opening time, these will be posted on the Barrie Police Service Twitter and Facebook accounts.
