Bad Luck is Like Gold for the Heart Attack Kids. It was the inspiration for several songs off their new record Bad Luck Like Gold, released last month.
The rock and roll duo will be touring in support of the new album and will play Barrie June 6.
Jared Ellul (vocals/guitar) and Nathan Stock (drums) have become known, since their 2016 debut album No Future their multi-piece rock and roll sound.
“I like when we show someone our music and they think it’s five people playing and we tell them it’s two and they’re always really surprised,” said Jared Ellul, who shares front man duties with drummer Nathan Stock. “We love playing live. It’s our favourite thing to do (and) we love writing music.”
Many of their songs are inspired by real life events. The title song of the new album came out series of breakdowns when their van during a US tour.
Their first video "Do What You Do" was inspired by university students in their home town of London, Ont., partying it up on Richmond Row. With the help of some friends, a bunch of confetti, streamers, and balloons, Ellul said it was one of the most fun videos they have ever done.
By contrast Sirens, All Summer showed London’s darker side.
“A couple of years ago, there was a bunch of homicides, stabbings here and it was pretty brutal,” he recalled. “You’d go outside and every single time police or ambulances were going around all over the place.”
Their first single Modern Decay featured Cancer Bats frontman Liam Cormier who also produced the album. The video for the song features him.
Ellul and Stock met during their high school years. They played in the same four-piece band even though they went to different schools. Ellul is a self-taught guitarist and vocalist and while Stock started out with some drum lessons when he was younger.
“We graduated and everyone went off and did other things and we just keep writing music,” said Ellul, of their early beginning as a duo in 2103.
Music continues to be their priority even though both work at other jobs between tours and during the winter months.
