Simcoe County Rovers Women dominate London FC to claim first place
The Simcoe County Rovers Women continued their stellar season with a 2-0 victory over London FC on the road, reinforcing their position at the top of the League1 Ontario standings. Midfielder Jen Milligan opened the scoring in the 18th minute, giving Rovers an early lead. Despite London’s strong defensive structure, the Rovers held their ground until halftime.
The second half saw striker Ally Rowe extend her impressive scoring record, netting her seventh goal in eight matches in the 67th minute. With smart defensive substitutions by Coach Zack Wilson, the team successfully saw out the game, earning a well-deserved three points.
Wilson praised his squad’s resilience, stating, “A very important and hard-earned win on the road against a well-organized London FC side. Credit to them—they’ve been one of the toughest teams to break down this season.” The coach also emphasized the team’s ability to adapt under pressure, adding, “We’ve built a culture centered on trust, resilience, and a strong mentality, and that showed in the second half.”
With a 6-1-1 record, Rovers now lead the standings with rivals NDC Ontario and Vaughan just a single point behind as the season’s midway mark approaches.
Rovers Men lose tight match against Oakville
The Simcoe County Rovers Men fought hard but ultimately fell 1-0 to Oakville, missing out on an opportunity to climb the League1 Ontario table.
After a scoreless first half, Oakville took advantage of a missed defensive assignment in the 47th minute, with former Rovers player Jalen Watson striking against his old team. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, the Rovers were unable to equalize.
Head coach Doneil Henry expressed frustration at the missed opportunity, stating, “A poor clearance and a poor reaction saw us down 1-0 early in the second half, and we couldn’t find a goal to even things out.”
The Rovers men now turn their focus to rival Vaughan Azzurri for their upcoming League1 Ontario match on Sunday, June 15, at 8:00 p.m. They will then face Unionville-Milliken in a League1 Ontario Cup elimination game on June 19 at 9:00 p.m. at J.C. Massie Field.
Meanwhile, the Rovers women return home to face Guelph United Women on June 15 at 6:00 p.m., followed by a League1 Ontario Cup match against Whitby FC on June 18 at 9:00 p.m.
