Two people were charged by the OPP after an auto collision that involved a police cruiser at the scene of an earlier crash Wednesday night in Orillia.

Just before 10:00, an officer who was stationary on Atherley Road near Higwhay 12 was out assisting traffic control after an earlier crash. While the intersection was being cleaned and the officer was directing traffic, they noticed recreational vehicle (RV) speeding toward their cruiser.

Eventually, the RV struck the cruiser, which caused significant damage, before heading toward other vehicles and workers in the area.

With help from Rama First Nation's police service, members of the Orillia OPP began following the suspect vehicle toward Ramara Township on Highway 12.

Not long after, the RV was located and two were arrested. Both occupants of the RV were brought to hospital with minor injuries, and were cleared after assessment.

As a result of the incident, a 41-year-old man of no fixed address was given 12 charged, including three counts of dangerous operation, two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, and two counts of mischief over $5,000.

Additionally, a 38-year-old woman from Orillia was charged with two counts of failing to comply with a release order, a charge the man was also booked on.

Both are scheduled to appear in court in Barrie on Thursday.

Members of the Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) Unit attended the various scenes along Highway 12 to process them as part of the ongoing investigation. Since then, the area has since been fully reopened.
