Scammers threaten Ontario businesses with explosive devices

Payment in Bitcoin demanded for removal of devices

Scammers in Ontario have upped their game.

OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says a number of business owners have reported receiving an email suggesting an explosive device had been left on their property.

“In order for that to be removed, they would have to make payment via Bitcoin to the author of this email,” says Schmidt.

Officers have visited these businesses and assisted the owners with a safety plan.

Nothing suspicious was found on any of the properties.

The Barrie Police Service (BPS) has been made aware that there may be emails received that appear to be from BPS. If you are unsure about an email from BPS, you can call the non-emergency line, and ask to speak with the person who the email is from, to ensure it’s a legitimate email.
