The province's Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate after a police shooting in Orillia that left one person dead after Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said an officer discharged their firearm after being stabbed.
Around 2 p.m. Thursday, OPP said they responded to an altercation at a residence on Barrie Road.
"As a result of the investigation, an involved individual was located on Cochrane Street. During the interaction, an officer was stabbed and sustained serious injuries. The officer discharged their firearm and as a result, the individual was pronounced deceased at hospital. The officer remains in hospital in stable condition," according to a police news release.
Earlier, police asked motorists and pedestrians to avoid Cochrane Street between West Street South and Matchedash Street South because of an investigation.
