The Township of Ramara is declaring a Significant Weather Event to alert the community that potential extreme weather conditions could pose a danger to users of Township roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
Freezing rain is expected to continue in our area throughout today and tonight (Dec. 28) until after midnight, followed by rain, high winds, and snow. Roads are getting icy and Township operations crews are actively responding to road conditions. Township equipment and generators have been prepared for the storm.
It is anticipated that travel will be extremely hazardous and power outages are likely.
Residents are encouraged to charge devices, ensure generators and vehicles are fuelled and have their 72-hour emergency kits ready to go.
Power Outage Safety Tips – Protect Yourself and Your Family:
- Stay warm using blankets and layered clothing
- Never use generators indoors (including garages or enclosed spaces) or near open doors or windows (carbon monoxide risk)
- Maintain at least 10 feet (3 metres) of clearance from your home, vehicle, deck, or any combustible material
- Always turn the generator off and allow it to cool before refuelling
- Do not overload extension cords
- Place generators downwind from your home and away from intakes to prevent carbon monoxide from entering.
- Do not use barbecues, gas stoves, or camp stoves indoors
- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed to preserve food
- Use battery-powered lights instead of candles
- Charge essential devices when power is available
The Township will continue to monitor conditions closely and respond as needed. Stay informed by following alerts and forecasts from Environment Canada.
