The County of Simcoe has received international recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO), earning the title of Age-Friendly Community for its efforts to create a supportive and inclusive environment for people of all ages—particularly older adults.

The designation places Simcoe County among a global network of cities and regions that have demonstrated excellence in age-friendly planning and implementation.

“According to the most recent census, nearly 20 percent of the County’s population is aged 60 and older, which is why we are committed to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for older adults,” said Warden Basil Clarke. “This designation reflects our dedication to building a community where all our residents can thrive.”

Global Standards, Local Impact
The WHO’s Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Program helps municipalities worldwide adapt their services and structures to meet the needs of aging populations. The program recognizes local governments that go above and beyond in creating age-inclusive policies, infrastructure, and programs.

Jane Sinclair, the County’s General Manager of Health and Emergency Services, called the designation “a proud moment” for Simcoe. “Positive aging depends on strong connections and accessible resources. We are proud to stand alongside municipalities from across the world in championing inclusivity and the well-being of our aging population.”

A Decade of Local Commitment
Simcoe County launched its Age-Friendly initiative in 2016 to raise awareness of the growing senior population and support businesses and organizations in adapting to their needs. The program continues to offer tools, resources, and recognition awards to help local groups develop age-friendly strategies.
