The County of Simcoe is preparing for a major overhaul following approval of a series of governance and procedural changes.
The changes will take effect with the 2026-2030 term of Council and are intended to align the County with changes made by the province under the Better Regional Governance Act, 2026.
There will be a reduction of County Council members from 32 to 17 for the next term.
The County's top political position will get a new name.
Beginning November, 15, 2026, the head of Council will be known as the County Chair, replacing the title of Warden, which has been used in the County of Simcoe since 1843.
The change follows confirmation from the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing that the province intends to appoint the County's Head of Council for the upcoming term through a provincial recruitment process.
The title of County Chair aligns with other regional governments in Ontario affected by the provincial changes.
Council has also approved the elimination of the Deputy Warden position, changes to several committees and adjustments to Committee of the Whole representation from Barrie and Orillia.
Those changes are intended to reflect the new Council structure and existing shared-service agreements.
An updated procedure bylaw is expected to come before County Council in September to incorporate the governance changes.
