Ontario SIU director Joseph Martino found no basis for criminal charges for York Regional Police officer after December firearm discharge resulted in death of 37-year-old Newmarket man.

The province's police watchdog is investigating after a man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound during an incident in Penetanguishene.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, Halton Regional Police officers went to a property in the area of Laurier Road yesterday morning to execute search warrants, and a man barricaded himself in an RV on the property.

OPP Tactical Unit officers attended as a negotiator.

"At about 9:30 p.m., OPP officers deployed pepper spray into the RV. The man left the vehicle. The man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound," the SIU said in a news release on Friday.

The man was transported to a Toronto hospital, but there is no word on his condition.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU investigates matters involving police in which someone is killed or injured.
