SIU seeks public’s help in identifying woman struck and killed on Highway 26 in Springwater

Police earlier received a call about a woman with a dog standing on the road waving her arms

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a woman who was struck and killed on Highway 26 in Springwater.

The SIU said a person called the OPP shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday to report a woman with a dog was standing on the highway near Carson Road and waving her arms.

A minute later, the OPP received a second call, this time from an off-duty Barrie Police officer who was in the same area. The officer reported the vehicle in front of him being driven by an OPP officer attempted to avoid something lying on the road.

The officers got out of their vehicles and found a woman lying on the road. Despite first aid efforts, the woman died at the scene. The dog was located off the road and was dead.

The SIU is appealing to the public for assistance to identify the woman. She is believed to be in her mid-20s. She was wearing an orange jumpsuit. Anyone who has information about the woman’s identity, or this investigation, should contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. Anyone who may have video evidence related to this incident is asked to upload that video through the SIU website.

The agency has assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to the case. One OPP officer has been designated as the subject officer. In addition, one Barrie Police officer and one OPP officer have been designated as witness officers.
