OPP has released new videos that focus on unsolved murder and missing persons cases, including one that takes people behind the scenes of a homicide investigation from decades ago to its successful conclusion.
The series includes the slaying of Sonia Varaschin, who was brutally murdered in her Orangeville house in August 2010. Her body was found in a wooded area off a dirt road in Caledon a few days later. The video lays out what police know and where the investigation stands.
The gruesome murder of Sonia Varaschin sent shockwaves through #Orangeville in 2010. 9 years later, investigators continue searching for answers and her family for peace. The other video touches on the disappearance of Melanie Ethier 23 years ago. She vanished without a trace while walking to her home in a small northern Ontario community 45 minutes north of New Liskeard.
There is also the case of 12 year old Kathy Wilson of Kirkland Lake. Thirty-nine years later, the OPP gets a confession and the family gets peace. This video is a rare look at the evidence and techniques the OPP can now share including interviews with the family and the undercover officer who got close to the murderer, and finally the confession 39 years after the child’s disappearance.
Anyone with any information that could assist in the Sonia Varaschin or Melanie Ethier investigations can contact Criminal Investigation Services, OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (tips).
