If you've ever toured Sainte-Marie among the Hurons or Discovery Harbour and wished you could just ... stay, you're in luck. Huronia Historical Parks has launched overnight cabin experiences at both sites, and they look pretty special.
A new way to experience living history
Most people visit these sites for a few hours. But there's something different about waking up where history actually happened. That's the idea behind these new cabins, and it's a smart one.
Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, nestled along the scenic Wye River, has been welcoming overnight guests since late November 2025. Discovery Harbour's cabins opened April 3, 2026, with panoramic views of Georgian Bay right outside your door.
"Overnight experiences offer a new, creative way to enjoy Huronia Historical Parks' living history sites with your family and friends," said Stan Cho, Ontario's Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. “Enjoying a night under the stars and staying in a bespoke, custom cabin built on-site by skilled craftspeople is a charming invitation for visitors to stay longer and make the most of their visit to Simcoe County.”
What the cabins are actually like
These aren't basic camping shelters. Both locations offer winterized, climate-controlled cabins with real thought put into the details.
At Sainte-Marie, the furniture was handcrafted by the site's own carpenters. You'll find an electric fireplace, a sofa, and a bar top with stools. It's cozy and comfortable, but still rooted in the character of the place.

Discovery Harbour's cabins sit just off the original Officers' Quarters. The heritage-inspired decor reflects Penetanguishene's naval and military history, and those Georgian Bay views are hard to beat.

Every cabin at both sites comes with:
- A private outdoor firepit
- Muskoka chairs and a picnic table
- Pre-purchase firewood delivery to your site
- Modern washrooms and full shower facilities nearby
- On-site parking and secure gate access
History is part of the package
Here's what makes these stays stand out from a regular cottage rental: every overnight booking includes a historic or event experience.
This past winter, Sainte-Marie guests gathered around the longhouse fire for Sky Stories, an immersive storytelling evening. Spring guests at both sites get a guided tour led by costumed historical interpreters. Summer brings full access to living history programming throughout the season.

"These new overnight experiences let guests slow down, stay longer, and truly connect with our historic sites," said Chad Moreau, Senior Operations Manager at Huronia Historical Parks. "Extended stays also help strengthen the local economy, supporting nearby restaurants, shops, and tourism partners throughout the region."
What It Costs
Overnight stays are $200 per cabin, per night, taxes included. That covers the cabin and all the historic programming tied to your visit.
