South Simcoe Police say their annual back-to-school traffic safety and awareness campaign will have them at schools in Innisfil and Bradford West Gwillimbury from Tuesday to Thursday.
Officers will be on hand during drop-off and pick-up times to enhance traffic safety at the start of the school year. They're reminding motorists that while traffic laws are consitent, penalties within community safety zones are higher.
Speeding in school zones and community safety zones yield higher fines and increased charges, but so do other infractions. Police say they'll also be watching for distracted driving, seatbelt infractions, and other dangerous driving behaviours.
They're also adding coverage around school buses to help motorists and pedestrians start the school year right.
Police are reminding motorists in both directions to stop for all school buses when the stop sign arm is extended and lists are flashing. They also consistently urge drivers to watch for pedestrians and obey crossing guard signals.
"South Simcoe Police remain vigilant, continuing to proactively enforce, and patrol our community roadways year-round to maintain public safety. It’s important that we all continue to do our part to ensure every journey ends with a safe arrival on every road, every day, for everyone," the service said in a news release.
