After launching the vision ten years ago, ground was broken Monday to begin construction on the expansion at Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Alliston.
Dignitaries included Premier Doug Ford and Health Minister Sylvia Jones.
The redevelopment was made possible through community fundraising and $174 million from the Ontario government.

"Today's investment at Stevenson will increase inpatient bed capacity and expand services offered to your family," Jones noted.
The redevelopment will be completed by late 2028 and include new and acute care areas, the construction of a new, three-storey building that will more than double the size of the hospital, to approximately 147,100 square feet, as well as increased bed capacity from 38 to 47.
There will also be a new emergency room that is triple the size of the current department.
"New Tecumseth is one of the fastest-growing communities in Canada. Similarity, our emergency department volumes have grown well in excess of our original capacity," said Carmine Stumpo, Supervisor at SMH.
Premier Doug Ford said the new SMH will connect more patients and families across Simcoe County to convenient, world-class health care.
The new facility being constructed on the current property will also include expanded surgical services, an expanded diagnostic imaging department with MRI services, a first for SMH, and a new birthing suite.
