Street Cats Rescue (SCR) in Oro-Medonte has used up its nine lives at its Shanty Bay location following a devastating fire and is searching for a new home in the Barrie area.
The blaze on May 26th started in a garbage truck and spread to the back of a building where the shelter is located on Shanty Bay Road.
Four people including executive director Carol Snow suffered smoke inhalation as they rescued more than 50 cats from the shelter.
The animals are now in foster care and some have been taken in by local veterinary clinics. As well, Snow says they have about 100 cats that were already in foster care.
SCR had been in Oro-Medonte for about 15 years.
"We're kind of starting from scratch," Snow told Barrie 360.
According to the SCR Facebook page, the organization is looking for a location that is about 2,000 sq. feet with an overhead door, bathroom, and a small kitchen, or at least a spot to put one in.
With the shelter essentially homeless, it is also one of the busiest times for SCR.
"It's what we call kitten season because all the cats are having babies now," says Snow.
Snow was heading out later in the day to pick up a couple of young cats which were born on a property.
"We're trying to keep going, but we are limited because we are just so full."
