News release - Simcoe County Rovers FC
The Simcoe County Rovers men’s team ride a three-game unbeaten streak into their matchup with 2-7-2 Windsor TFC on Sunday.
Having not lost since June 4th, the men come into the match 6-2-3, good enough for fourth place in the League1 standings and only three points back of Vaughan Azzurri for second place.
That is important, as the top four teams in League1 get to host a playoff game, which was one of the primary goals for the Rovers ownership and management staff coming into the season.
You do not have to look far as to why the Rovers are in this position so late into the season.
The team has been consistent, as they have yet to lose back-to-back games all season and have been led by Ethan Beckford, who has been one of the best goal scorers in League1 this season.
The native of Manchester has a team-leading seven goals for the men this season, with five of those goals coming in the last five games.
There have been no garbage time goals in that stretch for Beckford either, who had two goals in the Rovers' 2-0 win on June 15th against Burlington SC, two goals in a 2-1 win over FC London on June 11th, and one goal in a 3-2 win over BVB IA Waterloo on May 29th.
For his efforts, he is tied with two others for the fourth-most goals in the league.
Kick-off is set for 2 pm from J.C. Massie Field in Barrie.
The personal success for Rovers players does not stop with Beckford as Aodhan O’Hara is continuing his trail with Fin Harps in the Ireland Premier League.
O’Hara, a local native, was quoted by team president Julian de Guzman as being one of the more pleasant surprises during the team’s training camp.
And after suffering their worst loss of the season on Sunday (a 5-0 loss to Vaughan Azzurri), the Simcoe County Rovers women’s team responded in a big way on Wednesday evening, beating BVB IA Waterloo 2-0 for their fifth clean sheet of the season.
After no score in the first half, the Rovers wasted little time opening the scoring in the second half, as in the 52nd minute, Cloey Uddenberg found the back of the net for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Then, 14 minutes later in the 66th minute, Soumaya Bouak doubled the home side’s lead for her second goal of the season.
The win improves the Rovers' record to 8-2-3 on the season and moves them into sole possession of fourth place, seven points ahead of Toronto North for the last playoff spot in the League1 standings.
The Rovers, who now host the 9-1-2 Woodbridge Strikers on Sunday (5 pm), are just four points back of FC London for first place and two points back of the Strikers for second place, making Sunday’s matchup for the Rovers their biggest game of the season.
It is a game you will not want to miss, with the ladies heading out on a three-game road trip – their longest of the season – following the match.
