The suspect in a now-cancelled Amber Alert for a one-year-old girl in southern Ontario has been linked to a fatal shooting earlier on Tuesday.

Provincial police issued the alert Tuesday on behalf of police in Peel Region for the girl who had been last seen in Brampton.

The alert was cancelled after the girl was found safe.

It came after a woman was shot dead at a Brampton commercial plaza, in what police believe was a case of intimate-partner violence.

Police say the suspect fled the scene with a child in the back seat of a vehicle, but the child is believed to have been dropped off with family.

The suspect is described as a 38-year-old white man with brown hair who is five-foot-nine and weighs about 180 pounds.

He is considered armed and dangerous and was thought to be in the Niagara Region community of Fort Erie.

In co-ordination with Peel police, Niagara Regional police say he is no longer believed to be in the Crystal Beach area.

A shelter-in-place alert in the area of Prospect Point and Ridgeway Road has since been lifted.

There is no further update on the suspect's whereabouts, but anyone with information is asked to call police.
