The new adaptation of The Wizard of Oz has a director

Down the yellow brick road, once again.

After an extensive search by New Line Cinema, television Director Nicole Kassell will be making the jump to the big screen and helming the newest adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Kassell was one of the directors behind the recently well-received television series version of Watchmen so she knows a thing or two about adaptations. “I am incredibly honoured to join Temple Hill and New Line in bringing this beloved classic to the screen,” Kassell said. “While the 1939 musical is part of my DNA, I am exhilarated and humbled by the responsibility of re-imagining such a legendary tale. The opportunity to examine the original themes — the quest for courage, love, wisdom, and home — feels more timely and urgent than ever. These are profoundly iconic shoes to fill, and I am eager to dance alongside these heroes of my childhood as we pave a newly minted yellow brick road.”

Not much else is known about the project including a release date, cast, or script, but setting in stone who will sit in the director’s chair is always some promising news.
