It might be hard to believe, but in all of Tom Cruise's career, he's never had a $100 million opening weekend. Until now.
This weekend, "Top Gun: Maverick" decimated the box office when the long-awaited sequel brought in $124 million in ticket sales throughout North America and $248 million worldwide.
It will only get better as U.S audiences celebrate Memorial Day Monday, which will drive that figure much higher by day's end.
The large figure is a first for Cruise, whose previous highest opening movie was 2005's "War of the Worlds," earning $64 million on opening weekend.
Top Gun: Maverick is the fourth biggest opening of a film in the covid era, behind Spiderman: No Way Home", "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" and "The Batman."
