Township of Oro-Medonte Council Composition and Ward Boundary Review

Review to identify fair and equitable electoral ward boundaries for the 2022 election and beyond

Provided by Township of Oro-Medonte

The Township of Oro-Medonte has a Mayor and Deputy Mayor that are elected at-large, and five Councillors elected in five separate wards. The Township is interested in resident perspectives regarding the current Council composition and ward boundaries.

Watson & Associates Economists Ltd. in association with Dr. Robert J. Williams have been retained to conduct a comprehensive and independent Council composition and ward boundary review of Oro-Medonte. The purpose of the ward boundary review is to identify fair and equitable electoral ward boundaries for the 2022 municipal election and beyond.

The review will begin with a thorough evaluation of the present composition of Council, and the wards established for electing those Councillors. This review will also form the basis for developing possible alternative ward boundary configurations. Information sharing and public
consultations will be undertaken during this process including multiple virtual community public engagement sessions.

Township Clerk Yvonne Aubichon commented that “each of Oro-Medonte’s five wards is a defined geographical area – every house and property in Oro-Medonte falls within one of these specific wards. As the Township continues to grow and change, some wards will contain more residents than others. In instances such as this, the boundaries may need to be adjusted to achieve effective representation.”

Based on the results of the consultation process and the technical analysis conducted by the consultant team, the public will have an opportunity to comment on possible alternatives during the spring of 2021. Recommendations are anticipated to be presented to Council during the
summer 2021 timeframe.

Other opportunities for residents to learn about the council composition and ward boundary review, and to contribute their views, will be provided through the Township’s website by visiting Ward Boundary Review – Oro Medonte and by following the Township’s social media channels; and
