Transit driver assaulted; bus damaged

The driver was not seriously injured

Police have charged a 19-year-old man of no fixed address after a person allegedly assaulted a Barrie Transit driver.

Police responded to the area of Essa Road and Burton Avenue around 6:17 Friday evening and were told the suspect left the bus and was last seen walking down Bradford Street. He was taken into custody a short distance away and allegedly kicked one of the arresting officers.

There were no serious injuries to the driver or police officer.

There was damage to the bus, according to police, including a broken rear exit door window and a plexiglass divider in the area of the driver's seat.

The teen was charged with the following:

  • assault
  • mischief under $5,000
  • utter threats to cause death or bodily harm
  • assault police
  • breach of youth sentence order.

While he was at the police station, officers learned there was an outstanding bench warrant for assault. The teen was held for a bail hearing on Saturday in which he was released with an order to appear in court on April 17.
