Two area First Nations communities to receive drone delivered pandemic supplies

This is an effort to limit person-to-person contact

Pandemic supplies will be delivered by drone to Georgina Island First Nation on Lake Simcoe and Beausoleil First Nation on southern Georgian Bay.

Drone Delivery Canada will carry out the service, which is partially being funded by the federal government as part of a project to look at wider use of drone deliveries.

The company will deliver protective equipment and testing supplies.

William McCue, a councillor for Georgina Island First Nation, said community members will feel at ease knowing they have a back-up supply chain. Even though the First Nation is near several urban centres, McCue said supplies have to be ferried in and can be delayed by inclement weather or rough waters.

Residents have to wait a week to get supplies, but drone deliveries can complete shipments on an hourly basis.

Drone Delivery Canada expects the shipments will start in the coming weeks.
