Two pets died in a residential fire on Penetanguishene Road Friday, according to Springwater Fire & Emergency Services.

Firefighters responded around 3 p.m. and included two stations, two additional tankers, and aid from Barrie Fire & Emergency Services.

“Crews made an aggressive attack upon arrival and were able to get the fire under control quickly, despite challenging weather conditions,” says Deputy Fire Chief Jeff French. “Thank you to our partners at Barrie Fire for their automatic aid assistance today.”

Officials say one person was sent to Barrie's Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre for smoke inhalation.

"A number of pets were rescued from the residence," officials added. "However, sadly one dog and one bird perished."

The cause of the blaze is under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

Damage is estimated at $300,000.
