An "unsanctioned car gathering" is being investigated by Barrie Police.
According to police, it happened Tuesday night between 9:50 and 11:50 pm at a plaza on Grove Street East and Johnson Street.
Details about the event was passed on to police that night and the following day when, according to Barrie Police communications coordinator Peter Leon, a "concerned" community member filed an online report.
"The citizen identified that the participants engaged in activities that included the high revving of motor vehicle engines, burnouts and disorderly activity that resulted in large amounts of smoke and a strong odour of burnt rubber polluting the normally quiet night air," police stated in a news release on Thursday.
The person also indicated there were motorists travelling at "very high rates of speed" on Grove Street East.
In the release, Leon noted that these unauthorized events often result in damage done to parking lot surfaces and if police are unaware of what is taking place, opportunities to provide enforcement and education cannot easily take place after the fact.
"Legislation that includes the Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act, Trespass to Property Act, as well as other provincial statutes are available to police and can be used to quickly bring an end to what is unacceptable behaviour on our streets and public property," according to the police news release.
Barrie Police urge the community to call 705-725-7025 if they are aware of or come across what appears to be an unsanctioned car or truck gathering.
