As part of the larger Being Black in Canada umbrella (presented by The Fabienne Colas Foundation), a series of short films will premiere on CBC showcasing the work of 15 promising black filmmakers.

Being Black in Canada is a pan-Canadian initiative that hopes to make up for the lack of diversity both in front and behind the camera by training and empowering a new generation of black filmmakers. Films created through the program explore the socio-economic issues and black realities in cinema and society, particularly their respective provinces and share possible solutions for better inclusion of black youth in the community. Auspicious hopefuls aged 18 to 30 are guided through the filmmaking process from research and screenwriting to post-production and promotion in order to create a 10-minute documentary short.

Six of these short films will premier this year on CBC, including The Onyx Butterfly, Joseph, Margarete & I, Black Sun, YYZ, Tallawah Abroad, and #Black.

Be sure to check out Being Black in Toronto, September 19th at 7:00 PM.
