Another winter storm is making a beeline for southern Ontario
On Thursday night, Environment Canada upgraded a winter storm watch to a warning for Barrie, Orillia, Simcoe County, Parry Sound and Muskoka, east to Haliburton and west to Grey County, as well as northern sections of the GTA.
"Snow is forecast to begin late Friday afternoon and will quickly become heavy at times, before transitioning to periods of rain Friday night as temperatures rise above freezing. Strong southeasterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h will combine with this heavy snow to cause significantly reduced visibility at times. There is also a risk of a short period of freezing rain Friday night," said Environment Canada.
Forecasters say peak snowfall rates of 2 to 5 cm an hour is possible. There is the potential for snowfall total of between 10 to 25 cm, with higher amounts in Parry Sound, Muskoka and Haliburton.
"While the prospects for a winter storm are high, uncertainty remains regarding the exact snowfall amounts at any given location," the weather office explained.
Once the storm clears, snowbelt communities could get dumped on by snow squalls.
"In the wake of this system, much colder Arctic air will become established across the region. A multi-day lake effect snow event is expected for locations east of the Great Lakes bringing additional snowfall accumulations to some communities," stated Environment Canada.
The placement of snow squalls and accumulation is still a toss-up.
