Year-round Daylight Time on the horizon for Ontario

Royal Assent and co-operation from Quebec and New York State still needed

Ontario is a step closer to year-round Daylight Time.

It’s just a matter of when.

The legislature last night unanimously passed a bill to end the biannual practice of moving clocks an hour ahead or back, but it hinges on Quebec and New York State doing the same thing. Provincial officials say they will be reaching out to counterparts in Quebec and New York to convicne them to follow suit.

Studies have found the time changes can cause serious negative health effects, including heart attacks, strokes and increased rates of depression.

Proponents suggest the switch to Daylight Time – meaning more daylight into the evening – will help promote consumerism, including increased shopping.
