Whether you were forced to endure them in the background during childhood or eventually became a fan, everyone knows of "The Young and the Restless."

The Soap Oprah celebrates 50 years this weekend. That's five decades of love, murder, obsession, cutthroat business practices, and coming back from the dead multiple times.

Oh yeah, and botched paternity tests and baby switching. Have to have those.

The first episode premiered on March 26, 1973, quickly becoming one of the audience's favourite stories.

The show intrigues and infuriates audiences, from the always-battling Newman and Abbott families to Victor Newman's never-ending list of wives.

The show celebrates the milestone with a masquerade ball storyline, and creators promise surprise visits from fan favourites, including Mamie Johnson.

The show was the mastermind of the late William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, who always pushed the envelope with storylines.

In an interview with the Associated Press, the Bell's Daughter Lauralee Bell, who plays Christine Blair on the show, says her dad was not afraid of being first.

"All the social issues he dealt with — date rape, AIDS, alcoholism, all of that. He felt that if our audience bonded with these characters, they would learn," says Bell. "If we could even help one person, it was worth it."

Tune in to CBS for you're Y&R fix.
