Barrie police have laid charges against the driver of a car who turned out to be a 15-year-old boy.

Just before 3:45 Monday morning, an officer on patrol spotted a vehicle turn southbound onto Essa Road from Gowan Street, without any tail lights illuminated. The officer stopped the vehicle a short distance away.

For starters, being just 15, the kid did not have a driver's licence. Police allege the teen was also found to be in possession of a large, bladed knife and marijuana.

The officer drove the youth home and was released into the custody of a parent. Police confirm the car the boy was driving belonged to a family member.

He has been charged with breach of recognizance, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, driving a vehicle without a proper rear light, driving a vehicle without a licence, driving a vehicle with marijuana readily available, and being under 19 years of age and in possession of cannabis.

The teen has a court date in August.
