South Simcoe Police is commending the actions of one of its constables for his actions in saving sheep and cattle from a barn fire in Innisfil on Wednesday night.

Around 11:10 p.m., police were notified of the blaze taking place at a farm on Innisfil Beach Road after the owner had noticed through security cameras that there was smoke and signs of fire.

Police say Const. Colin Niewels, who grew up on a local farm and had experience handling livestock, arrived on scene within minutes, and immediately noticed smoke coming from the barn.

Upon entry, he located the fire source extinguished it before it could spread further through the structure. The barn remained intact and there were no damages or injuries reported.

Neighbouring farmers eventually arrived to evacuate the animals from the barn as a precaution.

By containing the fire, police say the actions of Const. Niewels and the coordinated efforts of other first responders and community members protected all 45 sheep and 16 cattle from harm.

Innisfil firefighters also attended the scene and worked to clear smoke and put out any other surrounding flames, according to police. They also remained on scene to ventilate the barn and ensure there were no remaining hot spots.

No foul play is suspected and the fire is deemed not suspicious.

"The South Simcoe Police Service commends Constable Colin Niewels for his quick thinking, courage, and decisive actions in protecting both the animals and property during this incident," it said in a news release. "The service also recognizes the prompt actions and coordinated response by Innisfil Fire and Emergency Services and the neighbouring farmers whose immediate assistance prevented a devastating loss."
