
Barrie police have charged a 26-year-old man following an incident downtown that involved threats made with a weapon.
Officers responded after two individuals were confronted at Meridian Place on the evening of May 27, 2026.
Suspect allegedly produced a utility knife during the confrontation
Police say the incident occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. when the suspect approached the pair and asked for cigarettes. The situation escalated when they refused.
After one of the individuals confronted the man, police say the man produced a utility knife, extended the blade, and made threats to cause harm. The suspect then fled westbound on Dunlop Street.
No physical injuries were reported as a result of the encounter.
Police located the suspect using CCTV footage
Investigators were able to identify and locate the suspect shortly after the incident.
Officers utilized CCTV footage to locate the suspect matching the description provided and placed him under arrest less than an hour later. A utility knife believed to be involved in the incident was also seized.
Multiple charges laid
As a result of the investigation, the Barrie man now faces several charges, including:
- Assault - two counts
- Assault with a weapon
- Uttering threats to cause bodily harm
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Failure to comply with a probation order
Police have not released the identity of the accused.
