The City of Barrie is cutting residential development charges by 50 per cent in an effort to encourage new housing and support affordability.
In a news release, the City says council approved an amendment to the Development Charge By-law on Sept. 16 that reduces residential development charges by 50 per cent. The reduced rates take effect on Friday and apply retroactively to building permits issued on or after March 30, 2026.
The City says the reduction is intended to encourage residential development, increase housing supply, and support the construction of new homes in Barrie.
It says the move is part of its ongoing efforts to support housing growth and create conditions for more housing options for current and future residents.
