A Christmas Story is getting a sequel nearly 40 years later

and we triple dog dare it to be good.
A Christmas Story

It's official, a sequel to the beloved classic A Christmas Story is in the works at Warner Bros and will start filming next month.

A Christmas Story is pretty unassailable as far as Christmas classics go. It follows a 9-year-old boy named Ralphie, along with his quirky family, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB gun (more precisely, an Official Red Ryder carbine-action two-hundred shot range model air rifle) for Christmas, but every time he mentions it, he is stonewalled by the phrase "You'll shoot your eye out, kid!"

A Red Ryder BB gun is nice, but we would trade 10 of those for just one of those glorious bunny suits.

The sequel, which already has a name, A Christmas Story Christmas, will take place 30 years after the original. A now-adult Ralphie takes his children on a tour of his family home, reminiscing over his childhood Christmas memories and coming to terms with the death of his father. Poor old man, maybe that furnace finally finished the job.

The really good news? The original star who played Ralphie, Peter Billingsley, is returning to the iconic role nearly 40 years later! You can also catch him for a few short scenes in another Christmas classic, Elf. He plays Ming Ming (the one who lets him know he's not a cotton-headed ninny muggins).

Along with Christmas Vacation, The Grinch, and Miracle on 34th Street (and of course, Die Hard), it's hard to find anybody without A Christmas Story on their holiday watch list. The sequel will certainly be fighting an uphill battle when it comes to assuring fans that it will stay true to the original film's feel-good yet darkly humorous style. Reboots, sequels, and remakes are a dime a dozen when it comes to movies today, and you can practically split the good and the bad right down the middle. Fingers crossed that this one falls on the good side.

There is no release date for the film yet, but it is set to start shooting (eyes out) in February.
