The owner of a stolen SUV was able to locate the vehicle using an App, Barrie police say.

Officers attended a Bishop Drive residence yesterday just before 7:00 a.m. to investigate the overnight theft of the SUV.

"Police learned that a key for the stolen vehicle had been left in another vehicle that was believed to have been locked," officers said on Friday.

"Later in the day, Barrie Police were again contacted after the owner of the stolen vehicle had located her SUV utilizing technology that was available through the manufacturer. Police attended the dead end of Edgehill Drive, east of Anne Street, and met with the owner’s spouse who was with the recovered stolen vehicle."

The SUV was taken to Barrie Police Headquarters for a forensic examination.

Police say loose change was the only property stolen from the vehicle.

"Barrie Police is reminding the public that any motor vehicle that must be parked outside on your driveway or in front of your home, should always be left locked and to make sure that no keys are ever left behind," officers added.

"Members of our community are also reminded that while you sleep, there are people who are looking for opportunities that they can benefit from. By always locking your car and not leaving valuables behind, or leaving anything in clear view, you will be taking the necessary steps to not become a thief’s next victim."
