Breaking up is hard to do, but not when the ice is unsafe to be on.

Innisfil Deputy Fire Chief Brent Black in an email to Barrie 360 said a male gained access to Lake Simcoe from the 30th Sideroad on Friday afternoon to go fishing.

Black said there was ice at the shoreline and he walked out with a sled carrying his fishing equipment.

"While out fishing, the wind picked up and broke the ice up, resulting in him being on an ice floe separated from the shore by open water. When our crews arrived on scene, he could be seen roughly 500 yards from shore sitting on the ice floe. Our crews geared up to go out and rescue the male by means of our Fortuna boat," Black added.

Innisfil Fire also requested assistance from Barrie Fire Service with their hovercraft due to the large amount of open water.

Once Barrie firefighters arrived on scene, Black said the male went with them by hovercraft and he was brought back to the 30th Sideroad at the Big Bay Point government dock.

Paramedics were there but the man refused medical help.

"He was at no point submerged in the open water," Black noted.
