The Collingwood and Blue Mountains Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged a local man following a series of fibre optic wire-cutting incidents that disrupted essential communication services across Collingwood.
Between February 16 and April 26, 2025, officers investigated seven separate cases where fibre optic cables owned by Rogers and Bell Canada were deliberately cut on hydro poles at multiple locations throughout the town. According to police, these acts of vandalism not only interrupted internet and phone services but also posed significant risks to public safety.
The cutting of the lines disrupted critical services, including access to emergency communications, and created widespread inconvenience.
Thanks to the assistance of vigilant community members and the widespread use of residential security cameras, investigators were able to identify a suspect.
The 44-year-old Collingwood man is facing seven counts of mischief under $5,000, as well as one count of failing to comply with a probation order.
