When is Victoria Day?
Victoria Day is always celebrated on the Monday preceding May 25, making it the first long weekend of the Canadian summer season. This year, Victoria Day lands on Monday, May 20, 2025.
Is Victoria Day a stat holiday?
Yes, Victoria Day is a statutory holiday in many parts of Canada, including Ontario. This means most government offices, banks, and many businesses are closed.
If you work in Ontario and your workplace is closed for statutory holidays, you are generally entitled to the day off with stat holiday pay, or to premium pay if you work that day.
What is Victoria Day and why do we celebrate it?
Victoria Day is a uniquely Canadian tradition that dates back to 1845, when the Province of Canada (before Confederation) officially recognized May 24 as a holiday to honor the birthday of Queen Victoria, who was born in 1819.
After her death in 1901, Parliament declared Victoria Day a legal holiday to commemorate both her life and reign as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
Over time, the day has become less about the monarchy and more about community celebration and national pride. From parades and picnics to fireworks and festivals, Victoria Day has evolved into a marker of Canada’s unofficial start to summer.
In many parts of the country, you’ll hear it referred to as the “May Two-Four” weekend. As any true Canadian knows, this is a nod to both the date and the classic Canadian tradition of picking up a 24-pack of beer to enjoy with friends.
