A man has been charged following an investigation into 16 break-and-enters that happened between September 23 and Wednesday in Barrie.

The incidents were reported primarily by commercial fast food businesses in Barrie, according to Barrie Police. They occurred overnight, and cash registers, cash drawers and safes were targeted for their currency.

Investigations conducted by the Barrie Police–South Simcoe Police Street Crime Auto Theft Unit that followed resulted in the arrest of a 42-year-old from Barrie Thursday morning.

He is facing a total of 62 criminal charges that include break-and-enter, disguise with intent and possession of break-in tools.

The man is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing, by video, in Barrie later Thursday while the investigation remains ongoing.

"The Barrie Police Service strongly encourages business owners and residents who have video surveillance systems in place to ensure that they are operational and properly maintained during hours when they are not open for business or you are away from home," the service said in a media release. "This technology can play an integral part in suspect identification and the ability to hold people accountable when they engage in criminal activity."
