Australia's Science agency wants residents to track their farts, all in the name of science.

The study is to help scientists better understand gut health symptoms experienced by Australians.

A report says 60 percent of Australians reported experiencing what they identified as excessive flatulence.

A spokesperson says “Passing wind is a natural occurrence and a sign that our digestive system is working as it should, to expel excess gas that is produced from breaking down and processing the food we eat.”

“Different foods, medical conditions, or even how we chew, or swallow can impact how our body processes the excess gas, leading to different smells, frequency or even volume.”

Participants will use a free 'Chart Your Fart’ to help keep a meticulous record.
