Barrie Fire rescues two people from Lake Simcoe

OPP say Lake Simcoe is not safe to be out on

Despite warnings from police and clearly visible open water, Barrie firefighters had to use a hovercraft to rescue two people from Lake Simcoe on Saturday.

The individuals were on the lake with an ATV when the ice started to break apart.

Firefighters from Barrie assisted Oro-Medonte Fire Service and attended at Line 9. The fire department tells Barrie 360 the pair were about halfway between Line 9 and 10 when they were rescued. The ATV wasn’t so lucky and went beneath the water.

On Friday, South Simcoe Police used an airboat to rescue three anglers on Lake Simcoe who became trapped when the ice broke and they started to drift.

Provincial police tweeted an alert Saturday afternoon that the ice on Lake Simcoe is currently not safe for use.
