Barrie Police asking dashcam owners to check their footage as investigators continue probe of fatal Sunday morning crash

Vehicle might've been in the area of Bayfield, Cundles, St. Vincent, J.C. Massie Way before crash

The Barrie Police Service is calling for those with dash cam footage shot in north Barrie on Sunday morning to come forward as part of an investigation into a fatal collision.

At around 7 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle struck a light pole at the corner of Cundles Road and Duckworth Street. The driver, a 23-year-old man, was killed in the crash. Police say it appears he might have been travelling in the area of Bayfield Street, Cundles Road, St. Vincent Street, Lions Gate, or J.C. Massie Way around 6:30 a.m., moments prior to the crash. Anyone who witnessed the dark, four-door car in the area, or has dashcam footage, should reach out to investigators at (705) 725-7025, extension 2912.

“We’ve been able to determine that the vehicle that was involved in the fatal collisions early Sunday morning at the corner of Cundles and Duckworth, more than likely came across Bayfield Street and made a turn onto Cundles Road East and continued to the point of impact, and ultimately where the vehicle came to rest,” police spokesperson Peter Leon told Barrie 360 on Tuesday. “We want to try, for the sake of the family, to find out any of the unanswered questions that we have that may assist our investigators, but most importantly, assist the family with dealing with their loss as well.”

Leon added the investigation into the cause of the crash remains under investigation, but many signs indicate speed played a part in the collision. “We can certainly say that speed was a contributing factor,” he said. “When a vehicle enters into a skid the way it did and loses control, vehicular momentum is such that it carries the vehicle in such a way. And we have the evidence on the ground to suggest and support that.”
