Barrie Police Officer Accused of Firing Gun During Pursuit

Police Watchdog Charge Officer

A Barrie Police Sergeant has been charged, after the SIU says shots were fired during a pursuit.

Police were called early on the morning of September 17th of last year to the Duckworth Plaza with reports of a theft there. Police spied potential suspects at a nearby gas station, claiming the vehicle fled upon officer arrival.

During the pursuit, the SIU says an officer discharged his firearm at the vehicle, while the car crashed into a tree at St. Vincent Park shortly after. All four suspects fled the scene, while three of them were taken into custody shorty after. A fourth was later arrested by Toronto police, found to be suffering a gunshot wound.

The 28-year veteran of the service has been suspended with pay, while a statement from the Barrie Police Service says “the Barrie Police Service’s Professional Standards Unit will be conducting a review of the circumstances of this incident following the completion of the court proceedings.”
