Barrie police sergeant charged with criminal harassment and extortion
Police say the allegations are related to events while off-duty
A Barrie police sergeant has been charged with criminal harassment and extortion.
In a news release, police said this is in relation to events while off-duty between 2016 and 2018. The charges stem from conduct towards another member of the Barrie Police Service (BPS).
Last July, Police Chief Kimberley Greenwood learned of the off-duty allegations, according to the release, and ordered an investigation into the conduct of the officer, who was immediately suspended from duty with pay in accordance with the Police Services Act. An investigation by the Barrie Police Service’s Professional Standards Unit resulted in two criminal charges being laid.
The sergeant is an 18-year member of the BPS. He remains suspended from duty with pay pending the outcome of this case.
“The Barrie Police Service takes all allegations of misconduct by our officers very seriously. We hold all our members to the highest standards, on and off-duty, and we are committed to remaining transparent and accountable,” said Chief Greenwood in the release.
Police will not comment further now that the matter is before the courts.
The accused has a court date on Mar. 7, 2022.
