News release - the City of Barrie
The City of Barrie is recognizing circular economy month in October, and October 16 to 22 as Waste Reduction Week with events happening in the Barrie community throughout the week, hosted in partnership with the Barrie Public Library.
The City of Barrie supports a circular economy: a system where the life cycles of products and items are extended and kept in circulation longer through activities such as reusing, repairing, refurbishing, repurposing or recycling. With this approach, waste is minimized; resources are maximized. One way the City supports a circular economy is by educating residents around decision-making with regard to waste.
The following events are happening in the Barrie community as part of Waste Reduction Week:
October 16: “Circular Economy Monday”
- Check out a display with books all about the circular economy and reducing waste at the Barrie Public Library Downtown Branch (60 Worsley St.); all day during operating hours.
October 17: “Textiles Tuesday”
- “Learn How to Mend by Hand” at the Barrie Public Library Downtown Branch (60 Worsley St.); from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn how to sew on a button, hem a pair of pants, repair a ripped seam or even make a quilt block all by hand.
October 18: “E-Waste Wednesday”
- Experts from the City’s Environmental Sustainability team will be attending Family Fright Fest to demonstrate composting with worms. The event takes place at Sadlon Arena (555 Bayview Drive) from 4 to 8 p.m.
October 19: “Plastics Thursday”
- Learn about how we can replace single-use plastics at home, school and work. Experts from the City’s Environmental Sustainability team will demonstrate items you can use. Let’s rethink and reduce our plastics use! Held at the Barrie Public Library Downtown Branch (60 Worsley St.) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Key facts:
- Like many other municipalities, Barrie continues to generate more waste every year. The more waste generated means the more the City must manage, which impacts the natural environment, increases costs and fills up the landfill.
- Fostering a circular economy means finding creative ways to make items, using things in new ways, or returning items for reuse. Examples include repairing or sharing things instead of throwing them out.
- The annual campaign for Waste Reduction Week in Canada began in 2001 by the Circular Innovation Council, a national, not-for-profit. In 2022, building on twenty years of success delivering Waste Reduction Week in Canada, the Circular Innovation Council launched Circular Economy Month, an expanded program to amplify Canada’s knowledge of the circular economy.
